Our Services
College Consulting for Students & Families
With over twenty years of experience in college counseling from within the secondary school system, our team has had a front-row seat to the admissions outcomes of thousands of students over multiple decades. This insight gives us the ability to provide clear, balanced, and integrated college counseling guidance–the data and scattergrams provided on Naviance and SCOIR only tell part of the story. From creating a strategic college list to submitting stand-out, authentic applications, we’ll guide your student with clarity, care, and expertise.
Each student and family will have an experienced team behind them consisting of a dedicated college counselor who oversees the entire college application process. The college counselor is the point person for the student and family. The student will also work with an essay specialist to draft their written work and will be provided an expert final check of their written Common Application. We help you tell your story with authenticity and impact so that your voice stands out in the admissions process.
Before you make any commitment to working with JLG Education Services, we offer a consultation designed to best understand your family’s needs.
The conversation includes questions like:
- What prompted you to schedule this consultation?
- Are you looking for independent school or college consulting?
- What educational environment do you think your student would benefit from?
Please do not worry if you don’t have the answers. Not knowing is an excellent place to begin.
Together we use this conversation as a starting place to determine if our team would be a good fit for your student and create a proposal for you with next steps.
What’s included in the comprehensive package:
- Up to 14 meetings with your dedicated college counselor. Most meetings occur between the student and counselor, but some key meetings also include parents.
- Up to 4 meetings with your dedicated essay-writing specialist.
- Up to 2 hours of asynchronous proofreading on your final essays and application.
- Access to our extensive college counseling curriculum designed to develop critical thinking skills while going through the application process.
When a student works with JLG’s team, they will learn along the way, and submit authentic, cohesive college applications that clearly convey their unique strengths.
Independent School Consulting for Students & Families
Our team has worked in admissions and counseling in a variety of independent secondary schools. As a result of this direct experience, we know that many independent boarding and day schools could be excellent matches for an individual student. The first step is for the student and family to take stock of what they are looking for in a secondary school experience, considering factors such as a student’s learning style, talents, goals, extracurricular interests, desired community feel, and need for financial aid. Independent schools offer varying educational philosophies, priorities, and selectivity levels, providing a diverse range of choices. We provide support in selecting and applying to the right independent schools for your family.
Option 1 – Parent Session
A one-time session designed to help parents understand the secondary school admission process, know what to expect, learn how to best support their student along the way, and leave the meeting with actionable next steps.
Option 2 – Comprehensive Package
A full-service program guiding families through every step of the process—from identifying schools, preparing for interviews, and completing applications and essays to selecting the best match after acceptance—so students can take more of the lead and parents can provide support.
Consulting for Public School Counseling Departments
In our experience, how a high school highlights the academic rigor of their courses has the potential to impact college admission outcomes, merit money opportunities, and high school rankings.
We believe philosophically that “rankings” of high schools are problematic and can be misguided. Unfortunately, these rankings can potentially inform perceptions of a school system. We are here to help you work within this existing framework to present your school in an accurate and positive light.
We would be delighted to hear from you. Please schedule a 30 minute consultation to learn more about how we partner with educational institutions.
Parent Guidance
We offer a Parent Strategy Session because parents often have questions related to their child’s educational development and are looking for expert guidance.
Here are a few examples of the types of questions parents have asked our team:
- Does it make sense for my child to apply to an independent school?
- I’ve heard that you need to take three years of the same world language to get into a competitive college. Is that accurate?
- What is an appropriate accommodation on a 504 plan?
- What information is most helpful to include in my parent response form to convey my child’s strengths to the school based college counselor?
We created this session just for parents. Please think of this session as a “virtual cup of coffee” with an educational expert. We will listen and offer professional guidance, and you will gain insight, resources, and reassurance. We aim to have you walk away with an actionable plan for your student.
